Sao Joao de Meriti is a city in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is a part of the metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro. Rio de Janeiro is one of the 26 states of Brazil. It is located in the Brazilian geopolitical region of the Southeast and its boundaries, all of them with other Brazilian states in the Southeast region are with Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo and Sao Paulo and plus its shore line, in the Atlantic Ocean.
 
Rio de Janeiro has an area of 43,653 square kilometers and its capital is the city of Rio de Janeiro, which was the capital of the Portuguese colony as of 1763, capital of the United Kingdom of Brazil, Portugal and Algarves as of 1806 and the capital of independent Brazil from 1822 to 1960. Brazil is the largest and most populous country in South America and the fifth largest in the world in both area and population.
