Located in the San Jose metropolitan area, 220,000 live in this important city. Alajuela is a province of Costa Rica. It is located in the north central part of the country, bordering Nicaragua to the north and clockwise the provinces Heredia, San Jose, Puntarenas and Guanacaste. The capital is Alajuela. In 2000, the population of the city was 716,286 and an area of 9,754 square kilometers. It is subdivided into 15 regions.
Costa Rica, officially the Republic of Costa Rica, is a country in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west and south and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Costa Rica was the first country in the world to constitutionally abolish its army.
