Central America is the central geographic region of the Americas. It is variably defined either as being a region of the Americas in its own right or as the southern portion of North America. Physiographically, Central America is a tropical isthmus that connects North and South America. It includes 7 countries and many small offshore islands. Las Piedras is a city of the department of Canelones and is located near the border with Montevideo department. It has a population of 69,222 in the year 2004 and is part of the Greater Montevideo agglomeration. Uruguay, officially the Eastern Republic of Uruguay or the Republic East of the Uruguay, is a nation located in southern part of South America. The Canelones Department, with an area of 4,536 square kilometers and 485,240 inhabitants is located to the south of Uruguay.
