Central America is the central geographic region of the Americas. It is variably defined either as being a region of the Americas in its own right or as the southern portion of North America. Porto Alegre has the best standard of living of all Brazilian capitals and it was the only Brazilian city listed on Jones Lang LaSalle's World Winning Cities. In 2005, the population of the city was 1,440,939 and an area of 496.8 square kilometers. Porto Alegre has a subtropical climate, with regular rainfall throughout the year. Porto Alegre is the most significant industrial center in southern Brazil and a key city for Mercosul.
