Central America is the central geographic region of the Americas. It is variably defined either as being a region of the Americas in its own right or as the southern portion of North America. Physiographically, Central America is a tropical isthmus that connects North and South America. It includes 7 countries and many small offshore islands. Overall, the land is fertile and rugged, and dominated through its heart by a string of volcanic mountain ranges with a few active volcanos.
 
San Jose is the capital and largest city of Costa Rica. It is also the capital of the San Jose Province. The total population is 340,894 and density is 7,639.94 per square kilometers. The total area is 44.62 square kilometers. According to the 2000 census, the city had a population of 309,672 people in San Jose Canton the latter half of the 20th century was a period of rapid growth for the city, considering that in 1950 its population was a mere 86,900. The metropolitan area of San Jose exceeds the canton limits and surpasses two million and half inhabitants.
